Growing up in remote outback Queensland is filled with challenges, but the teens of Sunhaven Downs manage to overcome everything thrown at them and keep on riding, loving, and laughing. In this introductory book to The Outback Riders series, Dane, Lani, and Matthew Winter's lives centre around their horses on their family's drought stricken cattle station, Sunhaven Downs. When their city cousin, Amy King, is left there by her parents for a year and declares that she hates horses, they know that their lives are ruined.

What they don't know is that Amy has a secret, a secret she is desperate to keep from her outback family. Her secret will ultimately save their lives, but not all of them, on the wild night that the drought breaks and the legendary Min Min lights emerge from the land to help. The book builds to a galloping climax of clashing events as the storms close in around Sunhaven and lives are held in the balance in the remote and untamed outback of Australia.

H www. Don't panic because equine nutrition is not that complicated Relax - certainly there are longwinded calculations that can be made to reach the correct level of nutrients. But that important word observation is the key in many ways. You can always tell if your horse is healthy, shiny coat, good mental attitude, bright eye and the ability to perform the level of work required If you are feeding a diet that is of good quality and one that is high in roughage then you are certainly on the right path, however for performance horses there may well be some things missing in this type of diet such as supplements.

A horse's daily diet should include about 40 different nutrients in all: the proper amounts of energy and protein; 15 different minerals, plus chlorine; 14 different vitamins, plus beta-carotene; fat; water; and at least four amino acids lysine, methionine, tryptophan, and threonine. Most equine diets may well supply the majority of these nutrients. Some nutrients such as protein, digestible energy DE , calcium, phosphorus, and selenium could be supplied in excess or insufficient amounts.

For growing horses and this means young dressage horses that are in work, zinc and copper should be added. Levels of vitamins A and E also can be a concern for growing horses and those in full work, so these vitamins need to be taken into consideration when formulating a feed regime. A young horse will require a different diet? Proper dietary nutrition is crucial for ensuring performance horses, such as those in dressage remain in peak condition.

When considering which feed to give horse there are a few factors to consider, is the feed you have chosen easy to access, what about cost? However for a more accurate body weight you can use this calculation: The amount of feed being fed each day. Remember that every horse is biochemically unique and factors such as temperament, age, location, previous conditions etc will have an impact on what you should be feeding your horse.

I always recommend weighing feed - this allows accuracy, just guessing can create problems. This includes your hay and hard feeds.

Hay weights can vary substantially too so weighing hay is a great idea; also Lucerne Hay will be different weights to grass or oaten hays. Feeding a diet high in roughage will almost guarantee a healthy digestive system too. The chart below is an excellent guide to the level of roughage required; always remember that every horse is different.

Those horses that carry their weight too well will obviously need less feed to prevent the risk of conditions such as laminitis.

So of the 1. Formulating feed rations I always recommend a very natural diet; this is not only cost effective and controllable, but much healthier for your horse. So if your horse is difficult to feed consider that there may be some digestive health issues going on. However the best option is to have. Balance with hay, which has more calcium than phosphorus especially in the case of legumes.
